The Mayor is elected for a four-year term, at-large, by all voters in the city. The Mayor presides over City Council meetings, serves as spokesperson for the community, facilitates communication and understanding among elected officials, assists the City Council in setting goals and policies by participating in its deliberations, and serves as the ambassador of the community.
With approval of the City Council, the Mayor makes appointments to fill vacant City Council seats and appoints members of city boards and commissions. The Mayor also makes proclamations and serves as a representative in intergovernmental relations.
John Speer is a lifelong Kansas resident, born in Wichita, KS in 1952. He has been a Kechi resident since 2000. John and his wife Pattie have five children and seven grandkids. They are active members of New Spring Church.
John was employed as a teacher with USD 262 from 2007 to 2017. He worked with KFDI and KEYN radio for 35 plus years as “John Boy" Speer.
John is a former Cub Scout leader and Big Brother and has been involved in many community activities in the Wichita area over his career. John has an easygoing leadership style with a strong emphasis on being a “connector” of people.
